Yahoo Mail gets multiple mailbox support for Gmail and Google Apps accounts

Yahoo Mail has expanded its server-side IMAP support to now include Gmail and Google Apps accounts. In doing so, you’re now able to further consolidate your emails under one umbrella inbox and service.

The company hopes that with this addition, it can draw more users to its email service so that they can experience Yahoo’s search capabilities within Mail and discover that it just works. Yahoo Mail already supports IMAP for AOL Mail, Outlook.com, and Hotmail.

In the world of email, Yahoo remains one of the top service providers, competing in a crowded space. But instead of just being a place for you to communicate with your family, friends, coworkers, and partners, Yahoo Mail wants to be perceived as being a universal database containing user information — your place to keep track of gifts you’re giving, people you care about, trips you’re taking, and more.

That’s something Yahoo’s senior vice president of communications products Jeff Bonforte said he’s unapologetic about. “It’s the only database universally owned by the user,” he told VentureBeat.

Yahoo promises that if you import your emails from your Gmail and/or Google Apps accounts, you’ll be able to take advantage of Yahoo’s search capabilities, meaning you can parse through your entire history of emails, no matter how long ago it was, from any connected mailbox. In addition, your contacts will be incorporated into Yahoo Mail’s smart address book, powered by its Xobni acquisition; you can also leverage its rich compose feature and a Yahoo Account Key that doesn’t require you to remember a password — just use your phone.

In a nutshell, with IMAP support, if you want to consolidate your emails across various addresses, Yahoo can be the central repository of your photos, joke threads, ecommerce receipts, emails, and more. It believes that it can offer consumers a better experience in looking at all your emails in an organized way, including not just the actual message, but referencing attachments and contacts that the system intelligently knows you need to include.

Yahoo said that those who want to connect their Mail account with Gmail can go into their Account Settings in the Yahoo Mail mobile app or on the desktop. This feature is available globally today.
