Learning to pick out a good game must start at a young age…
I remember my mother doing that scolding whispering thing, “Just pick a game and lets go!” she’d say sternly, trying hard not to embarrass herself in front of Albert the game shop owner.
“OK mom” I would politely reply. After all it was her who drove me to the store and funded my video game exploits. However, her pleas were of no use and Albert knew it. The wheels in my head were spinning rapidly generating a thick unbreakable concentration.
I was trapped in a ritual trance, it was a rite of passage which gave me pride. Most of Albert’s day was probably spent watching others like me dance from one end of the room to other comparing the back of every box looking for an answer.
In fact, I had watched many times, others trapped like statues in front of a great wall of games until they’d break out to ask, “So which one is the best?” Albert would shake his head and ask “Well, whad’ya looking for?
I knew better than to ask for the easy way out. I even knew what I was looking for… The RIGHT game. You know, that one golden find with the potential to change everything you know about video games. A game which would link spiritually, technologically, or even physically to all the other games that came out after it…
Well, everything is much more dramatic when your younger but in many ways I still feel the same way today. Each game published is a step towards the future. Every title is a lesson that has the potential to teach developers about how to design the next game with better user interface, tighter gameplay, and even more immersive narratives.
Perhaps services like Gamefly have killed some of the magic from my childhood but I still get a good burst of adrenaline when reading about new releases.
However, our wallets aren’t endless and we are once again thrust into a solemn trance of internet research, previews, and marketing to help us decide which games we will purchase and play throughout the year.
With a vast number of great games coming out this Fall it’s almost impossible not to get overwhelmed with excitement for picking that perfect game. Of course, now that I have control of my own wallet I intend to purchase a majority of the games that interest me, but imagine for a moment that you could only pick one…
Like I said, overwhelming. Well in order to make my choice I had to make a list. Here are my top ten most anticipated games for the rest of the year.
