Today, Nintendo announced a new game for Wii entitled WAG (acronyminous for Wagging Action Game). “WAG is a game that satisfies both casual gamers and core gamers,” said President of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata. “People of all ages, children, twenty-somethings, and seniors will enjoy the romping fun of WAG,” Iwata detailed.

In WAG, players assume the role of dogs in territorial competition over various places. At such iconic locales as the beach, backyard, and park, players vie to complete objectives and, ultimately, dominate the area. By using the Wii Remote, players are able to “wag” their controllers to wag their dogs’ tails at one another. Players also dig holes by “digging” with their Wii Remotes and bark by “barking” into the optional Wii Remote attachment, also announced today: the WiiMic.

The genesis of WAG rests in the hands of legendary Nintendo Designer and Producer Shigeru Miyamoto. “When walking my dog one day,” Miyamoto stated, “I thought to myself: does the dog wag the tail, or the tail the dog? Well, in WAG, players are the ones who wag the tail. Players of all ages enjoy wagging their tails at each other in a way that can be experienced only on Wii.”

WAG takes full advantage of Nintendo’s innovative  Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service, allowing twelve players to “WAG” with one another online. To wrest control of territorial plots of land, players work in coordinated dog packs. Top players are appointed Alpha Dogs and are able to command their pack to target spotted objectives. Different dog breeds, such as Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, and Golden Doodle, are playable, each with unique attributes and capabilities. Dogs may be further customized with dog tags, adjusting abilities like bark pitch and wag speed.

“There is much to be announced regarding WAG, but this is all we are able to announce at this time. Please look forward to the release of WAG in summer 2010.”

When pressed for details, Iwata blushed and responded, “Well, I suppose I could give you a hint: fire hydrants.”
