Usually I like to put more thought and effort into writing a piece and try to stay away from posts that would fit better on a message board then on Bitmob.com, but I have to make an exception with this post because I feel like this is worth putting out there.
The 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII is great. You might have read the Eurogamer piece comparing the PS3 and 360 versions and deeming the 360 one "disappointing." Now, I am not a hardcore tech-guy so I am probably not the best to comment on the quality of Eurogamer's piece, but as someone who just loves games I have to say that I am having an absolute blast with 13. If I had to make any guess as to what Eurogamer may have been talking about (other than their techno-jargon, which means very little to me) I have noticed some aliasing in Lightening's hair… Otherwise the game is one of the most graphically impressive games I have seen. Ever.
If you have a choice then I can totally understand going with the PS3 version, but if you are holding back on buying this game because of posts like Eurogamer's then I kindly suggest getting in the car, driving to your local game store and grabbing yourself a copy of this great game.
I am not really a huge fan of RPGs. I have tried almost every one that has come out for this round of consoles, however, and am having a much better time with 13 then any previous titles.
To get an idea of my taste in RPGs I guess it might be helpful to know that Skies of Arcadia is my favorite RPG of all time, and one of the only non-western RPGs that I have ever beaten.
Now, I can see hardcore RPG junkies complaining about 13 spoon-feeding players, but from what I have played the great save system means the title is more pick-up-and-play then most RPGs. I have heard a few people complain about how you can choose to replay battles if you loose them, but so far I have only had to do so once, and doing it only really meant not having to return to a title screen, pick my file, reload and then battle back to where I was from my previous save. I don't call that spoon-feeding, I call that the saving grace that will pretty much ensure I beat this title.
The cinematics are the highest quality I have ever seen, and watching the detail as skyships crash into buildings and explode in a hail of fire and metal have really convinced me that the long development time of this title was well used. Saying that this games visuals and action are of a higher caliber than any other RPG this generation is not hyperbole. I promise.
So… I really like the game. I am already more attatched to these characters than any other JRPG I have played this generation, and can already tell I will stick with this game until the end.
I guess this ended up being more of a diary of my first four hours with the game then just a post on the 360 version, but I felt like all of this was worth saying since this game seems to have become shrouded under a cloud of fanboy fussiness over which version is the best. So, in closing I ask you to ignore all the hoopla over resolution and frame rate, and just enjoy this title. I know I am.
