The Electronic Entertainment Expo has been around since 1995 and has been host to some of the largest announcements in gaming history. PlayStation, PlayStation 3, Nintendo 64, Xbox 360 and most major software releases. E3 2010 will go down as one of the greatest shows of all-time because of the wholesale redirection gaming development.

The "new arms race” has begun. Game developers will now be pressured to create motion control and true 3D games. We have now been shown the first steps toward in-home Virtual Reality with Killzone 3 on the PS3 combining the PlayStation Move and Stereoscopic technology. This reorientation will be as important as the adoption of pseudo-3D games that followed the release of Super Mario 64.

Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft all believe that motion control is the best way to get new/non-gamers to play video games by incorporating a user interface that anyone can understand, the human body. Controllers are complex with analog sticks and buttons that are associated with certain tasks. Basic motor skills to interface with a game is something that is easy to learn and hopefully fun for everyone.

This E3 Nintendo went the opposite direction by aiming at reacquiring the “core gamer” by making major advancements its most successful hardware ever, Nintendo DS. The Nintendo 3DS is the most important piece of handheld technology since the original iPhone was announced.

Nintendo is combining the newest technology videogames have to offer into one new handheld console. The 3DS will feature:

  • -Glasses Free True Stereoscopic Monitor (new hi-res top screen. 3D can be turned off)
  • -Gyroscopic Sensors (New)
  • -Motion Sensors (player facing camera)
  • -3D video capture (2 back facing cameras)
  • -Touch Screen (higher resolution)
  • -Analog Slider (New)
  • -Wi-Fi and LAN Interconnectivity (upgraded)
  • -SD Memory

Just as importantly, 3DS will also feature games the core and hardcore gamer will likely want to buy. Nintendo showed they are partnered with the developers of Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Saint’s Row, Assassin’s Creed, Kingdom Hearts and Star Fox.

Each console developer showed that they are investing heavily in motion control, Stereoscopic visuals and acquiring new gamers.

The console wars have been taken to the next level. Who will/what win your money?
