Independent game makers from around the world are gathering in Los Angeles this weekend to show off their games at the annual festival dedicated to indie gaming. Indiecade is a fascinating exhibition-conference mash up where people can play games and developers of every ilk come to contemplate all things game.
The Indiecade Conference has a ton of panels and information to offer any game enthusiast. A day pass will cost you about 10 dollars but nets you the chance to hear Jenova Chen(ThatGameCompany, Flower) and Robin Hunicke(ThatGameCompany, Boom Blox) talk about the decisions that led them to make their next game(Journey). In another panel an open interview will be conducted with Doom creator John Romero.
An awards ceremony, hosted by LeVar Burton(Star Trek: NG’s Geordi LaForge) will take place where 32 games will be considered by judges for awards in various categories like; aesthetics, sound, innovation, and gameplay.
Brenda Brathwraite(Industry Veteran, creator of Train) and Frank Lantz(Game Lab, R/GA Interactive) will be this giving keynotes this year and Tim Schafer(Double Fine, Full Throttle, Monkey Island) will be receiving a Trail Blazer award for his influence within the industry.
One of the coolest features of Indiecade is the exhibition element. Anyone can come out and enjoy the Indiecade “city walk” for free. Art galleries along Culver City Blvd are packed with indie games and the people who made them. Limbo, Bit Trip Runner, and VVVVVV are just some of the awesome games that will be there – Come check it out!
