…but not the death of local multiplayer. Tucked inside streaming gaming service OnLive's ho-hum announcement at CES of software integration into Vizio TVs is a little nugget of ingenuity. Vizio's 3D TVs will support what they're calling "Versus" gaming — essentially using the stereoscopic 3D technology to overlay two images on the screen, so two players can take advantage of the full screen real estate at once. When wearing a cheap pair of special glasses, you'll only see one of the images. It's splitscreen gaming without splitting the screen.
The downside? Since the 3D tech in the TV works by weaving together two 540p images to make glorious 1080p, each player's visual experience will drop to sub-HD quality.
Still, not a bad tradeoff for squished screens you usually put up with when playing splitscreen with your friends — and a very cool alternative application of 3D technology.
