Another Friday, and another weekend to enjoy an Indie game! We'll cut right to the chase.
This XBLIG Friday brings you a game that lives up to its name… The Impossible Game really is quite impossible, but it's this type of challenge that keeps you trying "just one more time".
The Impossible Game has no story; there are no real graphics to speak of (all there is are squares and the occasional spike); heck, you only use the A button to jump. However, in this simple presentation lies a devilishly difficult platformer.
Let's start with the fact that there are no checkpoints: That's right, if you mess up and send your auto-scrolling square into a spike, you have to restart at the very beginning. Add on the fact that the level is in itself difficult and requires perfect jumping to get through, and the game certainly becomes a challenge. The Impossible Game has almost a nostalgic feel, however… trying to memorize the pattern in which to jump, hold down the button to keep jumping, or when to simply fall so you don't hit a spike… it harkens back to a simpler time of gaming.
Also, let's not forget the music. The song that plays in the background just fits this game, odd as that may sound. You may even be able to find clues within the music; the music tends to pick up the pace when the jumping gets more frantic. The single track in itself isn't bad, either… and it restarts every time you fail, so sometimes is seems like you're playing to hear the end of the song as much as you are to reach the end of the game.
Oh… wow, only that many tries?
Well, are you looking for a challenge this weekend? Something that you can sink your gaming time and skills into? The Impossible Game will be a great choice for your weekend time-waster. Is certainly isn't a looker, but there's always more to a game than how it looks… or how many buttons it uses.
Interested? The Impossible Game is 80 MS Points ($1), and you can check it out here. Also, if you really enjoyed this, there's also The Impossible Game Level Pack, a stand-alone sequel that features three new levels, also at 80 MS Points ($1).
