With Infinity Blade 2 on the horizon, how can Chair raise the bar?
Plastic peripherals. Such devices evolved the rhythm game from PaRappa the Rapper to Rock Band, and it can do the same for iPhone apps. Infinity Blade is the perfect game for this tansition. Given the amount of items in the game, full sized plastic swords and shields will make the game’s swipe-and-draw mechanics that much more immersive.
One obstacle will have to be hurdled. Due to the iPhone’s use of capacitive touch, technology will have to implemented on the plastic swords and shields that will elicit response from the screen. A simple enough issue, given the industry's ability to create a pretend skateboard without wheels.
Once conceived the implementation designs itself. The player must place the iPhone on the ground, or other flat surface, as their hands will be quite occupied during the game. (Having a friend hold the phone is certainly not recommended as you will soon see.)
The player will back up a few paces in order to provide clearance for swinging the sword.
- For dodges, the player will touch the appropriate arrow with the end of the sword.
- If the player wishes to use his shield, he must mash his peripheral into the iPhone, the harder the better.
- To parry, the player must simply swipe the end of their sword across the iPhone’s surface in the appropriate direction, taking care not to knock the iPhone out of a window or into their significant other’s face.
- When the player “breaks” the enemy, creating an opening in the enemiy’s defenses, the player will chop furiously at his iPhone with the sword until maximum damage is delivered. Again, the player should take care not to launch the iPhone into a wall or otherwise void its warranty.
