Sony has recently announced an interesting way for Playstation Portable owners to get all of their PSP titles on the Vita. As already known, the Vita can play PSP games, but it does not have a UMD port, so gamers are stuck with only their PSN games to play. Sony has found a workaround for this, the UMD Passport System. Basically, you can download an application onto your PSP system and register your UMDs, one by one. Once they are registered, you can buy them for a reduced price. Some titles' priced are translated here, with yen price values.
This system is getting a bit of unrest among gamers, mainly for the price. Why would you want to re-buy a game you already own, anyway? Well, the simple answer is that you don't have to. Sony is offering an option for gamers to play PSP games that they didn't buy on PSN. While the prices for a few games may seem a little much (such as 1,500 yen for Persona 3 Portable), the price for a lot of the games is pretty cheap. It'd be hard for most gamers to transfer their entire collection to the Vita, yes, but the internal memory space isn't likely to give you the option for that in the first place, really.
Also, for those worried about losing their save data, Sony will be releasing a program that can help transfer the data from the PSP to the Vita, using a PS3 or PC to move the data between portables.
Sony could have not given us this option for transferring our UMDs; it's actually quite a deal, as gamers could have been forced to re-buy the games for full price if they wanted to play them on the Vita. Sony cannot give away free digital copies of games already owned on UMDs, that is something publishers would have to decide on. In addition, let's not forget that systems can't be backwards compatible forever… companies have to move on when a medium becomes unnecessary or obsolete, and that is exactly what they are doing with the Playstation Vita.
So, how do you feel about the Passport System? Will you use it? Are the prices too high? Is this all a big fuss over nothing? Tell me your thoughts!
