EA announced the next installment of Medal of Honor back in February and the first trailer was posted on March 7. After reading the promotional material and watching the trailer, I have to ask if EA is trying to imitate Modern Warfare – again!
In a newsletter sent on 3/7/2012; EA stated: Step up to the next edition of the most authentic shooter franchise in Medal of Honor: Warfighter where you'll take Tier 1 to the next level. This time the Operators are international, the battlefields are global, and the action is powered by Frostbite 2.
The Medal of Honor-series has earned its reputation for successfully recreating historic battles and telling the soldiers story. The 2010 reboot broke away from WWII to focus on the Battle of Takur Ghar during the War in Afghanistan. EA used game-play elements introduced by Modern Warfare to the capacity that they felt was needed to enhance the game without having to compromise the aspects that would make it a unique game.
EA should have learned that trying to imitate Modern Warfare would be a fallacy on its own war games. Battlefield 3 single player campaign would be a good example to look at for it was heavily panned for being too much like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at a slower pace.
Yet again EA is attempting to “copy & paste” the concept of Modern Warfare onto one of its own games in an obvious feeble attempted to re-dominate the war-shooter genre. Already it can be predicted that the single player campaign will be panned for its attempt at imitating Modern Warfare.
Gamers played Medal of Honor because they expected a game that would recreate a battle from the on going War in Afghanistan because they want to play something besides Modern Warfare 2.
This is why EA needs to stop trying to imitate Modern Warfare 2 and make the effort to be original or go back to its roots.
