If you are one of the three gamers looking for a PS2, get it now. The sixth generation of consoles is officially over. On December 28, Famitsu reported the permanent cease of production for the Playstation 2, after almost 13 years of service since 2000.

Selling over 150 million units worldwide, the end of production marks the final stage for the sixth generation, with the Nintendo ceasing production of the Gamecube in 2007 and Microsoft ceasing production of the original Xbox in 2006.

At the very least, this is not surprising: Sony has been churning out a plethora of high definition ports for the PS3 such as the Silent Hill HD collection and Shadow of the Colossus.

The Playstation 2, having gone through several incarnations of hardware and software upgrades and modifications, marks the end of an era supported primarily by third party development.

Likewise, though production of the PS2 has ceased, complete cease of production for its juggernaut third party industry remains uncertain. However, judging by patterns exhibited in the Gamecube and the Xbox, the assumption of finality of the PS2’s production can be safely extended to its games and support hardware.
