To be honest I think I do a damn good Snake impression if anyone wants an earful of it…ladies? Yeah, I’m sad that I won’t be able to hear David Hayter’s snarling “Meeeetal Geaaaarhhh” in Metal Gear Solid V. Maybe it’s the nano-machines coursing through my body that makes me a little itchy and feel like Hideo Kojima is trollin’ us. We’ve been fooled before. I do. I remember. The one-handed cartwheel will never look the same to me.

The exclusion of David Hayter feels like Mario shaving his moustache, Ryu wearing shoes, or (le gasp) Dante with black hair. But MGS V is the prequel to the 1987 NES/MSX2 release of the original Metal Gear. I’m going to throw my ballot in the box and say that Big Boss is simply too old to be used for Big Boss.

Remember? He’s that old dude in Metal Gear Solid.  Les enfants terribles. It really wouldn’t make sense for Big Boss to continue sounding the same. That sort of ruins the canon if you think about it – granted, we’ve never heard Big Boss’ voice in Metal Gear Solid.

It’s Hideo Kojima, let the man respect his creation. He almost didn’t even do this game in the first place; so be grateful, ya jerks.

But here’s why I’m not really worried. HD remakes/rehashes/reboots/returntosenders have been on the rise. We can all agree that we’ve seen plenty of those toward the end of this generation of console gaming. Kojima or not, here is Konami with the potential to bring us a 1987 Metal Gear remake.

Cue “1995 Splash Screen” toward the end of the credits at MGSV.

Cue codec sound, a slightly grizzlier Big Boss voiced by Kiefer Sutherland.

Cue codec call, a clean-cut soldier (who bears a resemblance, duh) appears.

Cue David Hayter’s Solid Snake snarl.

But maybe I’m just putting all my eggs in the wrong basket, or maybe a genius pitch for Konami. Who knows? I’m just in denial that I might never hear David Hayter’s Snake. Who else feels sort of bittersweet about this?
