Overkill and Starbreeze, makers of the upcoming Payday 2, have been having a damn good week, and it looks like they want to get players in on the celebration.
According to a (Swedish) press release published August 8th, Payday 2 has officially become profitable just on pre-order sales alone. With nothing but a solid cash harvest looming on their horizon, Overkill has sweetened the deal by making two announcements.
First, anyone who has pre-ordered Payday 2 through Steam will receive the game’s first DLC free of charge. Overkill has stated this is a token of thanks to the thousands of beta testers who have been fiddling with various beta builds over the past several weeks. The DLC, which is currently in development, will focus on robbing an armored transport on its way to Washington D.C. to deliver cash, jewelry or gold.
Overkill has stated Payday 2 will have five DLC releases overall, though there are no specific dates or details available yet. The first Payday received over 20 patches of free content and fixes to the game. Starbreeze CEO Bo Andersson Klint has unofficially said Payday 2 will receive similar treatment with things like a higher difficulty setting.
In addition, Overkill has unexpectedly granted beta access to any Steam users who own a copy of Payday: The Heist. Those users will find the uninstalled Payday 2 Beta in their Steam libraries, granting access until the full game releases on August 13th. If nothing else, these players can consider this a sort of temporary demo.
Payday 2 is looking like it will have long legs depending on how well it’s received in the next few weeks.
