Snowflake is partnering with all-in-one productivity platform Coda, as part of its broader effort to give enterprises new and easy ways to unlock value from their data assets.

Under the engagement, Snowflake said it is investing in Coda — which has already raised $240 million across multiple rounds — through its venture capital arm and launching a new integration (a Snowflake Pack) that will allow Coda users to sync information from their Snowflake data cloud instances into active projects.

The move is expected to give all business users, including those with non-technical skills, an easy way to analyze data and make decisions, right where all the work is happening. Snowflake refused to share the specifics of the investment, but Shishir Mehrotra, the co-founder and CEO of Coda, did hint in a blog post that the company is leading a “large investment” round as part of this deal.

How Snowflake and Coda plan to drive value

Coda was started in 2014 with one key goal: de-clutter the set of tools an average enterprise user has to use daily. To achieve this, the company built an all-in-one collaborative workspace that enabled users to connect all their documents, spreadsheets, presentations and applications on one unified surface for a simplified work experience.

Today, over 40,000 enterprises use Coda for their day-to-day work. Part of this success directly stems from the introduction of packs or integrations that allow users to sync live data from different third-party platforms into their Coda workspace.

“Coda currently has over 600 integrations — known as Packs — covering a variety of use cases across the enterprise. From data platforms…to systems of record like Salesforce and Jira, to collaboration tools like Figma, Slack, and Zoom, Coda Packs enable end users to synchronize multiple data sources, edit bi-directionally, and create their own unique visualizations and workflows — all in one place,” Mehrotra told VentureBeat.

With this investment, Snowflake is launching a dedicated Snowflake pack on Coda, allowing customers to make information from their data cloud accessible inside the productivity platform, in real time. This will make it easy for any team to discover, access, collaborate on and build workflows from Snowflake data, right where they are already working. Imagine a Coda doc with a graph of sales data that automatically gets updated with the latest information from Snowflake.

Mehrotra said the integration allows users to bring tables backed by custom Snowflake queries into Coda docs. Once the initial admin setup has been completed for the pack, users can drag and drop the tables into their docs to unlock new use cases.

“Because Packs are familiar building blocks in Coda’s canvas, once the table is available in the doc, both technical and non-technical knowledge workers can easily turn that data into charts, add columns and connect to different sets of data while also providing the ability to apply workflows and automations, create visualizations, and make data-driven decisions,” he added.

Significant benefit to business users

While the partnership has just been announced, Coda confirmed select customers were given early access and they were quick to come up with some interesting use cases. For instance, when planning a customer meeting, users were able to bring together documents, spreadsheets, presentations, BI and Salesforce reports and data from Snowflake to get a comprehensive view of the customer in one place.

“A few of our early customers have consolidated this mess of data and context into Coda Account Plans, backed by Snowflake. Not only does this give account teams a comprehensive source of truth, but it also lets sellers build custom workflows based on the unique needs of the account (for example, creating a simple button to send relevant webinar invites to new users),” Mehrotra noted.

Notably, Coda has even used the pack internally to highlight up-to-date progress data from Snowflake in their release documentation. The company also built workflows using that information, including those for weekly reports and customer reachout.

“Having up-to-date data in the same place where the team was collaborating made it much easier to align our team, and that was only possible with the Snowflake pack,” Mehrotra said.

As the next step, the companies plan to build on this work and launch AI capabilities to help knowledge workers turn data into action.

While questions largely remained unanswered on this front, Snowflake did indicate the launch of joint products, leveraging the power of Coda’s existing AI features and Snowflake’s AI capabilities, such as LLM app service Cortex.

“We’re working on a deeper set of integrations of how Snowflake data and the Coda surface work to bring structured and unstructured information together, and enable enterprise teams to take action based on their company data,” Mehrotra said.
