Google acquires cloud commerce company Orbitera

Google today announced that it has acquired Orbitera, a company that provides tools that software makers can use to sell their products as cloud-based services.

“The current model for the deploying, managing and billing of cloud-based software does not easily fit the way today’s modern enterprises operate. Orbitera automates many of the processes associated with billing, packaging and pricing optimization for leading businesses and ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) supporting customers running in the cloud,” Nan Boden, head of global technology partners for the Google Cloud Platform, Google’s public cloud infrastructure business, wrote in a blog post.

Orbitera has previously been a partner of Amazon Web Services (AWS), the largest cloud infrastructure provider. Orbitera chief executive Marcin Kurc previously spent three years working at AWS.

The AWS Marketplace is a popular place for software companies to bring their wares so that developers can use their products cloud-style. Now Google is clearly interested in bolstering its offerings in that department.

“Orbitera has built a strong ecosystem of enterprise software vendors delivering software to multiple clouds. This acquisition will not only improve the support of software vendors on Google Cloud Platform, but reinforces Google’s support for the multi-cloud world,” Boden wrote.

The company is not immediately changing how it deals with its customers, Kurc wrote in a blog post.

Orbitera started in 2011 and is based in West Hollywood, California. Investors include Double M Partners and Resolute Ventures. Customers include Adobe, Esri, NetApp, and Oracle.
