Now there’s a whole new way to keep the latest version of an application’s code hanging around — and a new way to contribute code to existing apps, too. Cloud provider Heroku today announced a new integration with Dropbox that will enable people to deploy code right from their Dropbox.

“With Dropbox Sync, we’re inviting more people to participate in the process of creating great apps and we’re giving existing users more choice and flexibility in how code is deployed to Heroku,” Michael Friis, a Heroku product manager, wrote in a blog post on the new feature today.

The new feature, which is in beta for the moment, creates new combinations with developers’ Git repositories and Dropbox accounts.

“For example, you might do your day-to-day development on a laptop, pushing changes with Git,” Friis wrote. “Later, if you need to make changes at a time and place where all you have is your iPad, no problem: Simply open your code in a Dropbox-enabled editor, fix the problem, hit the Deploy button in Dashboard and you’re done.”

Heroku, the platform-as-a-service (PaaS) cloud Salesforce.com bought in 2010, competes with PaaS clouds from Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, among others. Heroku has focused on ease of use while also amping up performance along the way. Today’s addition demonstrates that Heroku continues to focus on giving developers as many options as possible — and keeping them comfortable on the cloud.
