Shasta Ventures, Yuri Milner, and returning backers General Catalyst, SoftTech VC, and SV Angel participated in this round, as CEO Sam Chaudhary told Re/code in a statement.
The company had previously raised $1.6M in seed funding in August of 2012 as well as some funding in 2011 through the Imagine K12 accelerator.
While many education-focused companies tackle problems such as making knowledge easily available (MOOCS) or smoothing the instructor-student relationships (material uploading platforms and social networks), ClassDojo aims at helping classroom behavior management fun and easy. It uses the flexibility mobile devices offer to teachers while simultaneously gamifying good behavior for students.
The platform also allows teachers to track students’ progress and to share reports with parents and school administrators. In the age of the “quantified self,” this is likely a very important feature both parents and teachers as they more easily adjust interactions and environments directly affecting students’ behavior.
