The European equivalent of the Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show drew a huge number of gamers to Cologne, Germany to check out the next generation in action.
Over 340,000 people attended the Gamescom consumer show to play games like Titanfall and Destiny on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles, according to Gamesindustry International. That attendance number is up 23 percent from 275,000 in 2012.
People flocked to the show, which was one of the first opportunities for the public to try the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft. Both companies put on huge displays and brought many of their marquee titles to the floor.
Current- and next-gen shooter Destiny, from publisher Activision and developer Bungie, took home the official Gamescom award for game of the show. The organizers of the event hand-selected the title, which puts players in a futuristic world where they work together with friends to defeat enemies and collect loot.
Gamescom began in 2009. The Federal Association of Interactive Entertainment Software holds the event each year in the Koelnmesse convention hall in Cologne. It is the largest video game event in the world in terms of attendance and exhibition space.
