The tweet said, “We are working towards a universal Elite experience but we cannot guarantee if or when a version will be available for the PC.”

The console version, which launched on schedule, has been plagued by outages. In a recent post to Elite members, Call of Duty publisher Activision Blizzard apologized for its rocky start and explained that greater than expected demand is crashing its servers. The publisher says Beachhead Studios, the developer charged with creating and operating Elite, is working to deploy additional servers to beef up the system.
The launch of Modern Warfare 3 set an all-time record by selling over 6.5 million copies and generating $400 million in revenues in its first 24 hours, according to Activision Blizzard. Elite was designed as a way to further monetize the Call of Duty franchise by offering premium services such as downloadable content and prize-winning tournaments for an annual membership fee of $49.99. Those premium services will not be available on the PC, however, and Elite will be free for gamers on that platform…if it launches.

VentureBeat has contacted Activision Blizzard to try to verify the status of Call of Duty: Elite for PC. [Update: Kyle Walker, a spokesman for Activision, said in an email, “Point of clarification, as we misspoke. The goal has always been to provide a PC offering for Elite. The timing for that free offering is still being determined, so stay tuned for news on that.”]
