This is the fourth entry in the franchise for home consoles, but it represents a shift for the series as it abandons the Eurasian setting of its predecessors.
The developer set Assassin’s Creed III in Revolutionary War-era America. It stars a half-English, half-Mohawk Native American named Connor Kenway. It’s due October 30 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC for $59.99.
“Preorders for Assassin’s Creed III at GameStop are nearly 100 percent higher than [Assassin’s Creed: Revelations], putting the game on track to be one of the top titles of 2012,” president of GameStop Tony Bartel said. “In addition, Ubisoft is offering high-quality downloadable content available at launch to bring even more excitement to this title.”
The series has sold 40 million copies to date. While the franchise experienced massive success in the past, critics began to express weariness with Ubisoft’s yearly updates. These preorder numbers suggest that the changes to the setting, character, and gameplay have reenergized the fan base.
