Over 2 million PC players have downloaded mods for Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim since the launch of the Skyrim Workshop on digital download service Steam last week, parent company ZeniMax Media announced today.
Mods, or modifications, are custom content generally made by the developer or by players and are a good way to extend the longevity of a game in ways that can be both useful and hilarious. Some player-created mods offer improvements such as a tweaked user interface, a better inventory system, or HD textures. Others, however, are just downright silly. Feel like exploring the world accompanied by your own laugh track while riding My Little Pony (pictured)? It can happen. Wish the dragons could be a little more “macho?” Download the Macho Dragon Mod, which turns all of Skyrim’s dragons into wrestler Randy “Macho Man” Savage.
ZeniMax Media says more than 2,500 mods have been published by the gaming community and all of them are available for free.
Skyrim has shipped over 10 million units across all platforms since its release in November 2011, representing approximately $650 million in retail sales. The company says data from Steam reveals that players spend an average of more than 75 hours in the game.
