Blizzard, the gaming giant responsible for megafranchises like Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo, has filed a trademark for “Heroes of the Storm.”
Blizzard’s AJ Park did the actual filing in New Zealand, according to PCGamesN. Park also helped orchestrate the trademarking for recent Blizzard projects like the digital card game Hearthstone and the Diablo 3 expansion Reaper of Souls.
5 reasons why Hearthstone is way better than a real card game.
We contacted Blizzard to see if they’d spill the beans on what exactly Heroes of the Storm is. Unless it decides to give me the exclusive of my life, however, we’ll just have to speculate. Could this be the next World of Warcraft expansion? The last one, Mists of Pandaria, came out on Sep. 25, 2012. World of Warcraft expansions usually come out every two years, so it’s not completely unlikely that Blizzard would start preparing for the next one.
This could also be a new name for Blizzard All-Stars, the company’s own attempt at a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game. The original MOBA, Defense of the Ancients, was a custom map for Warcraft III. Successors like League of Legends and Dota 2 are hugely popular, standalone games. Blizzard’s MOBA was originally set as a part of Starcraft II’s multiplayer, but it’ll now be its own, separate product.
Besides those possibilities, Heroes of the Storm could also be some sort of expansion for Heartstone or a completely new project entirely. Hopefully, Blizzard will reveal more soon.
