Michael Myers, rocket crashes, artillery strikes, and radioactive tankers — Call of Duty: Ghosts Onslaught sounds like it will be an adrenaline junkie’s dream come true.
Onslaught, scheduled to release exclusively for Xbox One and Xbox 360 on Jan. 28, is the first of four planned downloadable expansions to the military-based first-person shooter, Call of Duty: Ghosts. Publisher Activision will release Onslaught at a later, unspecified date for other platforms.
Included in Onslaught are four new small-to-medium-sized maps, a unique new weapon, and a new episode for the Extinction cooperative/survival mode.
The first new stage is “Fog,” an homage to classic horror movies full of bone-chilling scenery that’s set on the mist-enveloped banks of a lake. By finding and completing a certain Field Order (which are dropped by downed opponents) during a match, one player will have the opportunity to go on a rampage as Michael Myers from the Halloween movies.
“BayView” should be much less terrifying than the first since it’s set on a Californian boardwalk complete with gift shops and an aquarium. Players, however, might still be afraid of lethal artillery strikes which opponents can call in from a naval destroyer anchored nearby.
“Containment” is set in a war-torn Mexican village full of structures like bars, cafes, and a church. The action will center around a tanker truck carrying radioactive cargo atop a ruined bridge, but those who prefer to pick off their foes from a distance will find plenty of rooftop vantage points on both banks of the dried-out river.
“Ignition” takes place in the middle of an aging Florida space launch facility. According to Activision, this level was inspired by “Scrapyard,” a popular one from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but adds dynamic action such as rockets crash-landing and the ability to roast opponents with massive fireballs from rocket engine tests.
In addition to all four of these maps, the Onslaught DLC comes with the Maverick, a brand-new “highly accurate, very dependable” (according to the press release) weapon which can switch between assault rifle and sniper rifle modes.
Finally, those who download Onslaught will receive the first chapter in a four-part narrative for Extinction mode, in which players team up to ward off alien invaders. “Episode 1: Nightfall” will feature two characters infiltrating a remote Alaskan facility and exterminating hordes of aliens, including two new species. Players will finally start to learn more about the origins of these creatures.
Onslaught will be available for $14.99. It is also a part of the Call of Duty: Ghosts 2014 season pass, which includes four full expansions for $49.99.
