Developer Mechanist Games revealed that the industrial-age fantasy world of City of Steam is heading into closed beta in just a few short weeks.
The free-to-play massively-multiplayer-online role-playing game uses your web browser, meaning you don’t have to download a massive file or client to play. The beta runs in “seasons” of five days each, starting on Nov. 16:
- “Springtide” on Nov. 16 – 20
- “Summercrest” on Nov. 30 – Dec. 4
- “Autumnwane” on Dec. 14 – 18
- “Winter Festival” on Dec. 23 – 28
Mechanist Games offers Beta Collaborator Packs – which gives you extra in-game currency, beta access, name reservations, City of Steam’s soundtrack, and other bonuses depending on the tier — for purchase. Funds earned from these packs go back into improving the game. It’s also encouraging fans to support it through the “Steam-o-meter,” a word-of-mouth social media campaign designed to increase awareness: the higher the meter rises, the more content gets unlocked for the closed beta.
Mechanist Games is an independent developer based in Xiamen, China. City of Steam is its first game.
