Consumers are buying PlayStation 4s at such a high rate that Sony is still having trouble keeping up.
Now, multimedia conglomerate is confirming that the demand for its latest home game console will continue to overwhelm the supply well into the summer. Sony Computer Entertainment boss Andrew House told the Wall Street Journal that the system is selling well in all of the nearly 50 regions it is currently available in. The PS4 went on sale in November in the U.S., and retailers have rarely had the system on their shelves for more than day at a time since. Sony sold more than 6 million PS4s around the world in its first four months. Microsoft hasn’t provided any updated sales numbers for the Xbox One, which is trailing Sony’s unit.

Demand for the system is highest in the U.S. and Europe, according to House.
While many early adopters were able to get their hands on a PS4, demand is likely to remain high as the console gets more exclusive software. Sony released developer Sucker Punch Productions‘ Infamous: Second Son for PS4 today. The open-world superhero game has players running and jumping around a city while wielding electricity-controlling abilities. Check out our review of the game.
PS4 is definitely the early sales champion, but that doesn’t mean Microsoft’s Xbox One is performing poorly. Both consoles are outpacing their predecessors. Regardless, Microsoft obviously doesn’t want to fall too far behind Sony. Part of the demand for the PS4 is due to its $400 price, which is $100 less expensive than the Xbox One. Microsoft doesn’t plan to reduce that cost for consumers, but it did introduce a deal that coincides with the system’s biggest release of 2014: Titanfall.
Anyone who buys an Xbox One right now can get Titanfall at no additional charge. While the sci-fi shooter is also available on PC (and coming to Xbox 360 in April), Microsoft is hoping that many gamers will upgrade to the Xbox One to help boost its sales in March. While Infamous is a pretty major game, nothing on Sony’s platform has quite garnered the hype of Titanfall — which has already helped Xbox One outsell PS4 in regions like the U.K.
