Changers are coming to Destiny. It’s almost as if we have no destiny, and fate is what we make for ourselves.

Developer Bungie is unleashing the patch for its sci-fi shooter on the PlayStation and Xbox consoles today. It will bring with it fixes for Destiny’s raid levels and changes to some of the bounties. Bungie is preparing to release The Dark Below, the first major expansion for Destiny, next week, and frequent and prompt updates are a part of keeping players happy so that they’re more willing to spend money on new content.

The biggest change in Destiny’s 1.1 update is the many buffs that Bungie is making to the shooter’s “Exotic” weapons. The studio wants players to feel like they have something that is awesome without breaking the game.

“Exotic Weapons are designed to look, feel, and sound overpowered,” reads the Destiny blog. “At the same time, they are not supposed to break the balance of the game. We hope these weapons challenge the way players think about their loadouts. Exotics will be a constant work in-progress.”

Bungie also made a few tweaks that should prevent the framerate from taking a hit when people use Party Chat on Xbox One.

Destiny is one of the best-selling games of the year, according to publisher Activision. The company revealed that players have registered more than 9 million unique characters in the shooter — although that counts individuals with multiple accounts. While that’s something that most companies will consider a success, Activision and Bungie have different expectations for Destiny.

The studio is hoping to keep gamers playing Destiny for years, but many people have already reached the level cap and run out of content. That’s why The Dark Below, the expansion that debuts Dec. 9, is so important. It introduces more areas and things to do, but it will also measure whether gamers are interested in spending more time in Destiny as well.
