The alien E.T. starred in one of the worst games ever made, but he’s back now in a new title now available for iOS devices.
E.T.: The Green Planet follows what happened to director Steven Spielberg’s cute little extra terrestrial as he successfully returns to his home planet after the events of the 1982 film, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.
Movie studio Universal partnered with developer Chillingo to bring this new mobile game to the market.
The Green Planet is a garden-growing game. Players use the little brown alien’s healing touch to bring the plant life of world back to its full glory.
“E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial is one of the greatest science-fiction films ever made and conjures up nostalgia for countless fans around the world. We are excited to commemorate this global cultural phenomenon by publishing an amazing new game,” said Chillingo cofounder Chris Byatte.
In 1982, publisher Atari released a game adaptation of E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial for its 2600 console. The developer rushed it to market due to a prolonged negotiation between the studio and Atari. The result is still considered one of the worst games ever made. Unfortunately, the publisher was expecting big things for the game and produced far too many cartridges, which it couldn’t sell to retailers. Atari reportedly ended up dumping thousands of copies in the desert so it would no longer have to pay for the warehouse storage space.
At least the E.T.: The Green Planet digital download, available in the Apple App Store, is at no risk of a similar fate.
