Publisher Square Enix’s Dragon Quest franchise is making the jump to smartphones and tablets — at least in Japan.
The publisher revealed that it plans to release most of its main Dragon Quest titles on iOS and Android. Those plans include the original Dragon Quest through Dragon Quest VIII. So far, the company is only announcing a Japanese release for these titles on the mobile operating systems. It has previously ported some of its Final Fantasy games to iOS and Android worldwide, so it’s likely the same thing will happen here.

Dragon Quest first debuted in Japan in 1986 on the Nintendo Entertainment System. It came to the states in 1989 under the Dragon Warrior name. Since then, the franchise has jumped to popular platfroms like the PlayStation with Dragon Quest VIII in 2004 and Nintendo DS for Dragon Quest IX in 2009.
Square Enix most recently released Dragon Quest X for Wii in August 2012 in Japan. It is a massively multiplayer online title, which is a first for the series. That game will hit the Wii U this year and will also come to smartphone and tablets via cloud-streaming company Ubitus.
