I now have more motivation to wrap up Dragon Quest VII as soon as possible.

Nintendo revealed today that Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King now has a release date: January 20 for the 3DS portable gaming console. It’s a repackaging of a PlayStation 2 masterpiece from 2005 (in North America), and it adds new player characters and quests. It is the third major Dragon Quest release for Square Enix in a 5-month span, with Dragon Quest VII hitting in September and Dragon Quest Builders in October for PlayStation 4, as the publisher continues to push the pun-tastic adventures (the series goes whole hog on cute wordplay, like the chain-wielding Chainine) in the States, where it hasn’t fared as well as Final Fantasy over the years.

The 3DS version also adds voiced narration in cutscenes and photo-sharing. Nintendo says that you can pose your characters and add stickers and filters to these pics you. And once you meet “Cameron Obscura,” you can also take pics of monsters and other things as well.

The original Dragon Quest VIII received heaps of praise for its British-tinged localization and cel-shaded artwork.
