LOS ANGELES — Microsoft kicked off its pre-E3 2013 press briefing with a new trailer for Kojima Productions’ Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

The trailer has a very Western feel to it, drawing inevitable comparisons to Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption. It showed off Phantom Pain’s open world, a first for the long-running stealth-action franchise. It also showed real-time weather effects and a new stealth move for Snake — hiding behind his horse.

At least it’s not a cardboard box.

We also got a glimpse of some of the characters that will appear in The Phantom Pain, including recurring villain Ocelot.

This is also the first trailer featuring actor Kiefer Sutherland as Snake. Sutherland’s involvement in the game was announced last week during a Konami webcast. He’s replacing the series’ longtime English voice actor, David Hayter.
