Forget the kids: Adults will love these 4 retro gaming toys

It's retro with a dose of extra retro.

I admit it — I still like toys.

And why shouldn’t I? Toys are fun. Who doesn’t like fun? Look, I’m not saying that I still play out elaborate and fictional battles between my G.I. Joes and Ninja Turtles, but I still enjoy grabbing a fun novelty item every now and then. And since I’m a gamer, why not get something that tugs on my retro, nostalgic heart-strings?

If you’re like me, then you’ll like this little list we put together. It features new (or upcoming) toys that have feature some retro gaming flair. Also, I’d like to remind you that Christmas is only a few months away, so you better be good if you want Santa to bring you any of these.

The Mega Drive Transformer

You’ve probably seen Transformers before. They’re the robot toys that can turn into vehicles. For example, Optimus Prime transforms into a truck. However, who needs a 18-wheeler when you can have a 16-bit gaming console?

This unique Transformer turns into a Sega Mega Drive, known in the U.S. as the Sega Genesis. It’s actually based on Megatron, the evil Transformer who leads the villainous Decepticons. He usually turns into a gun, but I’d take a Mega Drive over a lethal weapon any day. Of course, it’s not a functional Mega Drive, but still.

The Mega Drive Megatron isn’t out yet, but you can pre-order one now from online toy store TF Source for $120. Another gaming console Transformer, this one based on the original Sony PlayStation, is also coming out sometime next year.

Remote Control Pac-Man and Ghost

Remember those R/C cars you had as a kid? Those were always fun, until you inevitably drove one off of a steep ledge and broke it. Well, why not relive those fond memories with some retro flair?

Specifically, this Pac-Man and Ghost combo lets you relive the eternal chase of the classic arcade game with the help of a couple remote controls. Imagine how funny it would be to let these suckers loose into a room full of clueless and confused onlookers.

You can usually grab this toy off of Geek Think for $40, although it is currently out of stock.

Sonic the Hedgehog with light-up Chaos Emeralds

Sonic is obviously still a popular character, with new games continuing to come out (including Sonic Boom for the Wii U and 3DS later this year). However, retro gamers probably miss the blue hedgehog’s classic design. Well, don’t fret! You can still find some cool toys that feature Sonic’s shorter, rounder look.

Especially cool-looking is this 5-inch figure. It, of course, is the classic Sonic, but it also comes with four Chaos Emeralds that can glow. I mean, I know Sonic usually needs eight emeralds before he can transform into his ultimate form, Super Sonic, but whatever. It’s still cool.

You can grab this set off of online collectible store Entertainment Earth for $25.

Super Mario Chess

Mario is just as relevant as ever, so Nintendo is more than happy to push out tons of merchandise. Still, if you want something a bit more interesting than a plush toy or an action figure, why not get yourself a Mushroom Kingdom themed chess set?

Super Mario Chess uses characters from the good and evil side of Nintendo’s biggest franchise, with the likes of Mario, Bowser, Peach, and Luigi standing in for kings, bishops, and queens. Not only is it collectible, but it’s actually a pretty cheap chess board, so it’s great for casual play. You can grab one from Amazon for $35.
