No wonder dogs are terrified of everything: Black-and-white vision makes everything scarier. That’s what I learned from the new first-person-shooter Betrayer from Blackpowder Games.
Betrayer is a moody black-and-white adventure set in North America in 1604. Players control a traveler that expects to join an English colony in Virginia. Instead of pilgrims and Thanksgiving, players will instead find ghosts and a world sapped of color.
Gamers will have to use muskets, crossbows, and throwing axes to survive the wilderness and find surviving members of the colony.
“We wanted to get back to crafting games more intuitively,” said Betrayer creative director Craig Hubbard. “There’s a sense of discovery and excitement when you navigate by instinct rather than market research and open yourself up to opportunities that arise during development.”
Blackpowder Games will release the title on digital-distribution service Steam’s Early Access on Aug. 14 for $15. This means that players can pay for and play the game soon and help the developers finish development.

Blackpowder Games is a new studio from former Monolith developers. Monolith was responsible for the original F.E.A.R. horror first-person shooter and the No One Lives Forever first-person shooter that parodies James Bond.
