At the big Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show earlier this year, publisher Electronic Arts dropped in a bit of charming whimsy between its triple-A games about explosions.
Unravel is a new game from independent developer Coldwood Interactive out of Sweden, and it is going to debut on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on February 9. This adventure tells the story of an old woman who has lost contact with her family and how Yarny — a magical creature made out of yarn — will reconnect her to the ones she loves. To accomplish his goal, Yarny will have to traverse photorealistic forest, urban, and industrial terrain while solving environmental puzzles. If that sounds adorable, that’s because it is, which makes it a unique entry in the EA roster of games.
To get players excited and interested in the release, EA unveiled a new trailer for the game that you can watch below:
We played Unravel at E3, and the game wrapped its yarn-based claws around our hearts for a few reasons. It is truly beautiful. The contrast of Yarny in a harsh world that looks realistic is mesmerizing. On top of that, Unravel is one of the first times we’ve seen a game about an old woman. It is refreshing to see something that isn’t about a bald space marine or a magical antihero. Instead, Unravel is about something most of us have had in our lives: grandparents and family.
Unravel’s release jumps into a busy first quarter of 2016. In January, gamers will get comedic role-playing game Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam for 3DS as well as first-person puzzler The Witness for PS4 and PC. In February, gamers will get a deluge of big new releases. That includes XCOM 2, Firewatch, ighty No. 9, Street Fighter V, Fire Emblem, Far Cry Primal, and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2.
So, it looks like you’ll never catch up on your backlog.
