The people of the United Kingdom sure do like over-the-top violence.

Grand Theft Auto V is now the best-selling game ever in the U.K. in terms of copies sold, according to sales-tracking firm GFK Chart-Track. This comes after developer Rockstar and publisher Take-Two Interactive released the open-world crime game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One last week — a year after its original debut on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. GTA V already held two major records in the U.K., and now it didn’t need long on Sony’s and Microsoft’s latest hardware to get its third.

“Even before this week,” reads the GFK announcement, “the 360 and PS3 versions of this game held the record for highest-grossing game in a week and also the all-time UK revenue record, reached after just 28 weeks to overtake Call of Duty: Black Ops.”

Last year’s GTA V release was already close to breaking Call of Duty: Black Ops’ record. The game only needed one day on the new systems to break it.

“Just the Tuesday sales of GTA V on PS4 and Xbox One were enough to also claim the all-time unit sales record in the UK,” reads GFK’s report.

It took five years for developer Rockstar to go from releasing Grand Theft Auto IV in 2008 to GTA V in 2013. The success of this years rerelease is likely good news for the developer, which is known for taking time with its games.

The game’s big sales numbers on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One also mean more people will start playing the GTA Online mode, which features microtransactions. It’s Rockstar’s plan to sustain its revenues into the future with GTA Online, and the release’s massive audience should make that more likely.

GTA V’s record-breaking performance is also a good sign for the industry overall in the U.K., which is one of the bigger markets in Europe. The previous top-selling game, Call of Duty: Black Ops, came out in 2010. That means the United Kingdom went the next three holiday seasons without a better-selling release despite Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops II selling better than the original Black Ops worldwide.
