I don’t know whether it’s something of which I’m proud, or something of which I’m ashamed, but I own an original DS. A “Phat” if you will. I’ve had it since 2005 and haven’t found a reason to upgrade yet.

My little trooper of a system. You've done well, you've done well.

The DS Lite? Why pay for a system that does exactly what the one I already own does? It’s the same reason I didn’t get a Game Boy Advance SP until someone gave me one for free.

The DSi? How many decent games have actually utilized those cameras? Not enough to justify the loss of my precious GBA slot, that’s for sure. Plus, the DSiWare games thus far have been pretty underwhelming.

And my unwillingness to upgrade would have continued with the DSi XL if not for one tiny little wrench in the gears: WarioWare D.I.Y.

How could one little game (that I can play on my current system mind you) get me in the mood to drop a couple Ben Franklins? Well, it’s a few things.

First, with a system closing in on its fifth year of life, that touch screen is becoming awfully un-calibrated awfully quickly. It’s not a big deal when playing Pokemon, Advance Wars and Mario Kart (I use the button configurations for all of those,) but not being able to select some of those tiny palettes in the corners of the graphics designer is a real pain.

Speaking of real pains, it’d be great to take advantage of WarioWare’s online abilities (despite those terrible friend codes,) but I’m unable to because my college’s wireless network is WPA encrypted and my poor original DS can only comprehend WEP networks. An XL would correct this problem easily.

But most importantly, trying to design a game in D.I.Y. on those tiny, dim screens of the Phat is horrendous. I need much more real estate to really let my creative juices flow and the XL has that in spades.

For people who are serious about designing games for D.I.Y., I’m coming to the realization an XL is the way to go, no matter what 3D concoction Nintendo has in the pipe.

Agree? Disagree? For those of you with the game, is a regular DSi good enough?

Also, if anyone has made any cool games, post Youtube links and friend codes in the comments. Once I upgrade my system to something WPA-compatible, I’ll be sure to do the same.

Lastly, I want to share this game I saw posted on Tiny Cartridge. Gotta love creative uses for memes.
