At the Penny Arcade Expo East last weekend, Halo 4 developer 343 Industries unveiled a new downloadable map that it built especially for the first-person shooter’s map-editor mode. While the studio originally slated the free level, known as Forge Island, for an April 11 release, 343 pushed it online today as a surprise to fans.

The map is available now on Xbox Live Marketplace or online via the Xbox Live website.

Forge Island separates itself from Halo 4’s other maps by giving creators several flat plateaus to build on. Other stages feature buildings and curved landscapes that interfere with item placement. The developers designed Forge Island to give would-be level architects a free canvas to go wild on.
