Let’s go exploring.

The third wing of Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft’s newest adventure, The League of Explorers, is out now. This guide will help you beat all of the bosses (or mine cart chases) inside The Ruined City.

Note that these strategies only cover the normal versions of each fight. The Heroic battles are much harder and typically require custom-built decks.

Lord Slitherspear

Hero power: Getting Hungry (Summon a Hungry Naga.)

Slitherspear starts with a 0/5 Cauldron with Taunt on his board. His Hero Power lets him summon a 1/1 Hungry Naga every turn for no mana. However, each turn the Hungry Naga comes with +1 attack. After 3 turns, the Hero Power turns into Enraged!, which gives Slitherspear +2 attack. After you kill the Cauldron, you’ll get a 1 mana Sir Finley Mrrgglton card, which will let you Discover a new basic Hero Power.

You’ll want to use an aggressive deck so you can kill that Cauldron early, otherwise Slitherspear’s Hungry Naga can safely damage you. Once the Cauldron is gone, the Mage’s Hero Power is great for killing those Hungry Naga, since they only have 1 health. This means you can either play a Mage or hope you Discover that Hero Power when you play Mrrgglton. I was able to beat Slitherspear with my Tempo Paladin deck, since my Silverhand Recruits were able to eventually clear out the Cauldron and the Hungry Naga.

Giantfin

Hero power: Mrglmrgl MRGL! (Draw cards until you have as many in your hand as your opponent.)

Giantfin is playing a Murloc rush deck against you, and his 0 mana Hero Power means he’ll always have as least as many cards as you. Play an aggressive or tempo deck (I used my Paladin one again here) against him that doesn’t leave your hand with a lot of extra cards. This way, Giantfin shouldn’t get extra draws.

Most of Giantfin’s minions will be relatively weak Murlocs with low health, but they can overwhelm you. Use area of effect spells like the Druid’s Swipe or Paladin’s Consecration to clear them. Giantfin can also use a spell called Mrgl Mrgl Nyah Nyah to summon three Murloc’s that died earlier, so he can fill up his board pretty quickly. Again, be prepared to counter with a spell or minions. If you can survive his initial onslaught and not allow him to draw extra cards, you’ll be fine.

Lady Naz’jar

Hero power: Pearl of the Tides (At the end of your turn, replace all minions with new ones that cost 1 more.)

Naz’jar’s Hero Power affects every minion, including yours. So, at the end of your turn, every minion gets replaced with one that costs 1 mana more. Usually, this is an upgrade. The important thing to do here is to keep as many minions on your board as possible, so that more can power up. Play cards like the Paladin’s Muster for Battle or the Hunter’s Snake Trap that summon a lot of minions at once. If you can keep your board full, you’ll eventually overwhelm her. Once again, I did fine here with my Tempo Paladin deck.
