Your Xbox One controller is getting an overhaul.

Microsoft revealed last night that it’s testing the latest firmware upgrade for the Xbox One controller. If you are a member of the Xbox Preview Program, you can try out the patch today. The biggest change is to how fast the controller connects to the console. It also brings other stability improvements. These upgrades are just the latest to hit the Xbox One as part of Microsoft’s plan to release updates for the system on a monthly basis.

Here’s how you can test the latest controller firmware:

  1. Make sure you are in the Xbox Preview Program.
  2. Connect your controller to the Xbox One with a USB cable.
  3. Sign into Xbox Live.
  4. Hit the Menu button on the joypad.
  5. Go to “Settings” and then to “Devices & accessories.”
  6. Select “Update” from this menu to download the firmware.
  7. Once the process finishes, you can check the version of the firmware you are running from the “Devices & accessories” menu.
  8. The firmware version should read “1.2.2236.0.”

This update should roll out to every Xbox One owner in the next few weeks. The company has, in the past, taken just under a month to move its patches from the Preview program to wide availability.
