Jabba the Hutt

The Star Wars universe is filled with plenty of scum and villainy, but few fit that description as well as the Hutts.

The species of giant slug-like gangsters play a central role in Rise of the Hutt Cartel, developer BioWare’s first digital expansion to its massively multiplayer online Star Wars: The Old Republic. The add-on is due this spring, and players can preorder it here for $19.99 (monthly subscribers can get it for $9.99).

In this downloadable content, players track the Hutt cartel to planet Makeb. The world features new allies, new enemies, and new technology. The expansion introduces five new story-driven missions and raises the level cap to 55.

“We know our fans want to keep experiencing the classic Star Wars storylines they love, and that’s what we’re delivering with the Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion,” said BioWare Austin executive producer Jeff Hickman. “The planet Makeb is shaping up to be one of our most breathtakingly beautiful settings and the clash with the Hutt Cartel is epic and exciting. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. We have a lot more surprises in store for our fans next year.”

Unfortunately, BioWare made no announcement about the availability of the Hutt as a playable race.

Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place thousands of years before the events of the films. It follows the events the Galactic Empire and its quarrel with the evil Sith Empire. Players can choose which side they want to play as.

While publisher Electronic Arts originally introduced the game as a pay-to-play MMO with a monthly subscription, it has since shifted to a free-to-play model that went live in mid-November.
