One of the weirdest Early Access games on Steam is rising out of that oven to overtake mobile.
I Am Bread is coming to iOS as a paid download, according to Bossa Studios. This unique game has players controlling a slice of bread that desperately wants to turn into toast. Using your grippy bread edges (Breadges™), you must scoot, climb, and swing to any object that might help you turn from soft and doughy to warm and crispy. The studio plans to release the app later this year, and it will feature all of the levels, achievements, and more that are in the PC version of the game along with all the stuff Bossa plans to add before I Am Bread leaves its early testing phase. Mobile gaming is worth $25 billion — although much of that goes to free-to-play games with microtransactions.
I Am Bread and Bossa are part of a recent trend in gaming that focuses on less refined experiences. One of the company’s previous hits was the wacky Surgeon Simulator that has players performing precise incisions and cuts with an arm that is incredibly difficult to control. Gamers — and especially audiences on video-sharing platforms like YouTube — gravitated toward the silly nature of the experience, and it’s clear that the studio is trying to serve that same market once again with I Am Bread.
Here’s the Bossa team making the announcement:

If you’re a PC superfan, don’t let this news drive you mad. While I Am Bread is in Early Access (a special portal on Valve’s Steam digital-download service for unfinished games), the studio said that it will focus on the PC release. That means Bossa won’t really start working on the iOS game until a 1.0 version reaches fans. At that time, Bossa will work with another studio on the mobile port.
But Bossa confirmed that it plans to leave Early Access this spring, so you won’t have to wait too long for that bread to bake.
