Developer Squad is bringing its breakout space-flight simulator to Microsoft’s home console. The developer just made a joint announcement of the port using the Xbox account on YouTube. This will give console players an introduction to this quirky game, which is all about building rockets, lunar landers, and space planes to help the citizens of planet Kerbal explore the cosmos. It’s another example of PC games finding new homes in consoles — and also a major success for a studio based in Latin America.

We’ve reached out to Squad for more about this port as details are light right now. We’ll udpate this post once we know more about a release date or time frame. We’ve also asked the studio if it has plans to bring Kerbal to PlayStation 4 as well.
This is a big move for Squad and Kerbal Space Program. The game started as an Early Access project where people could buy access to play it before it was even close to finished. That was way back in 2011. In those early days, players could only build ships and test fly them with no real mission structure or purpose. Since then, Squad has constantly updated and added content until it released the “final” 1.0 version in April. These days, the game has a fully fleshed out campaign — and that likely makes it an experience that could work on console.
We adore Kerbal at GamesBeat. It’s a love letter to physics and NASA, but it’s still impressive to see watch it escape the gravity of its humble beginnings to find huge success on PC and now, potentially, on console as well.
