Konami is taking inspiration from the world of free-to-play games by adding an new paid-for insurance scheme to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Konami is launching the Metal Gear Online multiplayer mode for The Phantom Pain in a major update today. It’s also launching an insurance scheme that protects any in-game assets stolen by rival players during infiltrations into your forward operating base (FOB) — an existing player-versus-player aspect of the open-world action game. This insurance scheme sounds similar to the shield mechanic used in mobile-strategy games like Clash of Clans, where players can spend premium currency to protect their bases from attack for a period of time.

Metal Gear Solid players can buy FOB insurance using in-game coins, which are available to purchase with real money and are also given out sporadically as a reward for logging in. The FOB insurance scheme compensates you for any materials and staff lost due to rival infiltrations (with a few exceptions, like wounded staff and nuclear weapons).

NeoGAF user Revolutionary reports that the insurance options are one day for 50 coins, three days for 100 coins, seven days for 200 coins, and 14 for 300 coins. So three days of insurance will cost you a dollar in real money. It’s not a huge sum, but it’s enough to rile gamers unhappy about free-to-play mechanics appearing in full-price console and PC games.

“Your FOBs are always at risk of coming under attack,” reads the update note from Konami. “Now, you can rest easy with FOB insurance (paid service).”
