E-sports association Major League Gaming welcomes back StarCraft II

StarCraft II players can once again compete on Major League Gaming’s biggest stage.

The e-sports league announced today that Blizzard’s popular real-time-strategy title will return to MLG this month as part of the GameOn Invitational tournament. That event will feed into MLG’s Summer Championship, which will also feature StarCraft II.

MLG’s Summer Championship is June 20 through June 22 in Anaheim, Calif.

In August, MLG dropped StarCraft II from its roster of titles. MLG chief executive Sundance DiGiovanni explained at the time that title didn’t fit into its plans.

StarCraft II, which along with the original StarCraft has been one of the most popular games in e-sports, was not part of the association’s most recent Championship in November in Columbus, Ohio.

In November, MLG told GamesBeat that it weighs a lot of factors when deciding which games to feature at its Championships. While it considers fan demand in the decision-making process, an MLG spokesperson also explained that it also has to take partnerships with developers and publishers into accounts.

The Columbus competition only featured major Activision’s shooter Call of Duty: Ghosts and Valve’s multiplayer online arena battler Dota 2.
