Minecraft developer teases ‘secret feature’ that’s ‘like Mario 64’

Minecraft is getting a sprinkling of Mario.

Minecraft is never finished, and one of its developers is looking at a Nintendo classic for inspiration.

Minecraft: Pocket Edition developer Tommaso Checchi at Mojang posted a cryptic tweet this morning that claims the PC version is getting something new. This “secret feature,” as Checchi puts it, is “great because it’s like Mario 64.” That’s all that Checchi said about the addition, other than pointing out that lead developer Jens Bergensten is the one implementing it. We don’t know what the addition is — although we’ve asked Mojang with the hopes that it’ll tell us.

While we don’t know exactly what this feature is, Checchi definitely sounds excited about it:

And fans of both Minecraft and Super Mario 64 have made a few guesses.

Painting portals is one common guess. The idea here is that players will have the option to somehow enchant paintings to act as teleportation portals. In Minecraft, you can already make portal gates, and you can already make paintings, so people are thinking you can possibly combine the two so you can jump into artwork. Of course, that is a throwback to the paintings in the castle in Super Mario 64.

Another popular guess is Mario’s long jump, which enabled the plumber to cross wide chasms by running and then hitting the duck and jump button in quick succession. That could change how players get around in Minecraft — but also doesn’t seem like something you’d call a “secret feature.”

And, finally, we have a few guess that are a bit sillier.
