Minecraft gets Mario 64-like flying powerup

You can finally soar above the blocky Minecraft world like a fat Italian plumber.

Flying is coming to Minecraft’s adventure mode.

Yesterday, a Minecraft developer teased that the PC version was getting a secret feature inspired by Super Mario 64. Today, Minecraft lead developer Jens Bergensten revealed that flying is coming to Minecraft — and it’s going to work a lot like the wing cap did in Nintendo’s 3D-platforming classic. Bergensten announced that his plan is to release the “dramatic feature” in the next incremental update for Minecraft later this week.

Check out the clip below to see the flying in action:

Bergensten used his Twitter account to dump a little bit of info about this new feature. First, in order to fly, you need to find a special cape. If you equip it, it will hang off your character’s back and enable you to glide over long distances. The Mojang developer also confirmed that you cannot craft this cape. You can only find it.

If you’re wondering what any of this has to do with Mario 64 — after all, plenty of games have had flying — it’s all about how the mechanics and physics of flying works in Minecraft. In the clip that Bergensten shared, you see the soaring character gliding downward and then lose velocity as they gain altitude. This is similar to how it worked in the Nintendo 64 game that Mojang used as reference.
