MLG and ESPN are teaming up to create the first-ever MLG X Games Invitational e-sports event at the inaugural X Games Austin event in June.

The event will run June 6 to June 8 as part of the Circuit of The Americas league series. It is part of the growing popularity of e-sports as fans who grew up with video games become spectators of the very best players. It also comes on the heals of MLG’s announcement that it will build a stadium in China to air e-sports events.

X Games medals will go to winners of the MLG Pro Gamers event for the first time. This will showcase the MLG Pro Circuit competition with brands such as Skateboard, BMX, Moto X, Rally, and Stadium Super Trucks, and musical performers like Kanye West.

MLG is inviting the top five Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer combat teams based on MLG Pro Points rankings. It will also invite the top three teams (CompLexity, EnVyUs, and OpTic Gaming) from the recent Call of Duty Championship to compete in the three-day invitational to be played on Xbox One.

Fans can watch the competition in person or tune in to the broadcast via MLG.tv, MLG.tv apps for iOS and Android, and MLG.tv app for Xbox 360.

“The popularity of competitive gaming and the MLG Pro Circuit is at an all-time high with millions watching the best gamers compete each month on MLG.tv,” said Don Reilley, MLG EVP Sales. “This collaboration with X Games will help further bring MLG to the mainstream while we provide advertisers with quality exposure and deep engagement with our fan base on MLG.tv across all platforms.”

Tickets are available on Ticketmaster for at least $90. More than a dozen artists, including the Flaming Lips, will perform at the event.

“The best athletes competing at the highest levels remain the core of X Games,” said Scott Guglielmino, the senior vice president of programming and X Games for ESPN, in a statement. “But we’re incredibly excited about being able to create a full-scale festival around that, which celebrates some of the other elements of the X Games lifestyle – music, friends, family, food and fun.”

Last week, MLG said it would build its first e-sports arena in China on Hengqin Island, off the coast of Macau and the city of Zhuhai.
