Neon colors, polka dots, and pastels — Nintendo is getting funky in Japan for the launch of the New 3DS.
Nintendo is channeling the look and feel of those Trapper Keeper folders and binders kids had back in the ’90s to give the New 3DS a sense of style. The packaging for the upcoming handheld in Japan features a wild clashing of colors and designs. Nintendo’s graphic designers covered one part of the box with yellow checkers and another with orange stripes. It’s a bold look that appeals directly to the kid in all of us that simply couldn’t show up to third grade unless mom bought us that Designer Series Trapper Keeper to keep our homework in.
The New 3DS is coming to North America in 2015, and we’ve asked Nintendo if we can expect similar box art when it launches here.
In the meantime, you can see the box for the black New 3DS at the top and the white New 3DS’s packaging below:
The New 3DS and New 3DS XL are due out Oct. 11 in Japan. Nintendo added a number of new features to the hardware including better 3D technology, a second analog nub for controlling in-game cameras, and near-field communication for connecting with Nintendo’s upcoming interactive toy line, Amiibo.
While the box for the New 3DS is covered in eye-popping colors and designs, the company went a little more conservative with packaging for the New 3DS XL.
