Nintendo announced Mario Kart 8 during today’s special Nintendo Direct live stream during the Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show.

“We have implemented antigravity throughout the courses” said Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata. This enables players to drive along walls and upside down through the environment using hover wheels. Karts also have gliders and can race underwater, as in Mario Kart 7 for the 3DS. Iwata says that Nintendo is adding more multiplayer modes for this Mario Kart than ever before.

We even saw one course that had a green cable car.

Mario Kart 8 launches spring 2014 for Nintendo’s Wii U console.
