First-week sales of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 tops $775 million worldwide. Publisher Activision said the military-themed first-person shooter netted all-time sales records for five major retailers — Amazon, GameStop, Best Buy, Target, and Wal-Mart — presumably during a shoddily edited highlights video booming with earsplitting dubstep music.

Sledgehammer Games General Manager Glen Schofield takes flak for a call to manipulate MW3's low Metacritic user score. Schofield, whose company co-developed the game with Infinity Ward, asked fans in a now deleted Twitter post to "go 2 Metacritic.com & help our user score. It’s suspiciously low. Be honest but help if u agree." Outrage over unfair boosting and score padding immediately ensued, and Schofield went back to being an honest member of the industry after his sudden bout of the crazy.

Game designer giant Hideo Kojima talks Metal Gear Solid 5 in the next issue of Official PlayStation Magazine UK. Notable topics discussed by the creator of the venerated stealth-action franchise include thoughts on the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Rising, his efforts to kill off longtime protagonist Solid Snake for over a decade, and the ominously titled "Project Ogre." No further info on what the latter entails just yet, but it's probably safe to say it won't involve medieval mythological creatures lumbering around wearing ocular implants and bandanas.

Square Enix licenses Epic Games' Unreal Engine once more for future projects. The publisher first utilized the popular suite of graphics tools in 2008's The Last Remnant, where it undoubtedly recognized the engine's vast capacity for glossy pineapple hairdos and gratuitous lens flare effects.
